Club – Tour of Britain Ride : Saturday 9th September 2023

A couple of weeks back, there was some discussion on a Wednesday evening club ride and some interest in riding up to Gloucestershire to view the Tour of Britain leg as it passes somewhere near Wotton-under-Edge.

Kev P has come up with a route to and from and found a suitable spot to watch the Tour of Britain entourage ride up Wotton Hill.

Depart : Grand Pier 8:15am, Priory School 8:30.

Return leg : Leaving Wotton Hill around 3.15pm, getting home around 8pm (lights would probably be a good idea, as would some emergency rations in case on route catering is absent)

Route out : https://ridewithgps.com/routes/43943650

Route back : https://ridewithgps.com/routes/44121376

Here is Kev's plan - I will quote from Kev's WhatsApp post

" I've laid out a route to Wotton Hill / B4060, the climb out of Wotton-under-Edge (everyone ok with this? I thought it might be a good place to watch, towards the top of a climb, with wide verges and plenty of space. I've put a link to the stage (above) which shows the full route and schedule, and I'm happy with alternative places). The route to Wotton follows the race route for the last ten or so miles by the way, so we might even get a cheer along the way.
The race ETA in Wotton is 14:21. According to the ToB website the roads will close 15 minutes before the arrival of the lead vehicles of the race, so I think we'd want to be there by about 13:45.
The route I've put together will take us, I think, about 4.5 hours - RWGPS says 3h45m but their timings are optimistic, especially for me. So I thought we'd leave from the Grand Pier at 8:00, calling at Priory on the way at 8:15, as we did with the 100 miler. Allowing for a stop at Cakesmiths that should get us to Wotton in good time.
The ride home should be a similar time, so leaving Wotton at 3 - 3:15pm we should be back at around 8 (lights needed!). Food on the way back might mean a stop in Bristol as Cakesmiths will be closed - I'm open to suggestions for this, or we could detour to Warmley Waiting Room which will be open until 5."
