Wednesday Evening Ride: August 3rd 2022

A nice easy potter around the lanes is planned this week. If the “Feature Climbs” of previous Wednesdays have been putting you off, this one could be for you.

Once more it’s an open ride, so everyone’s welcome. See you outside priory school at 18:00

Wednesday Evening Ride: 27th July 2022

Once more conditions are looking great for the Wednesday ride; warm, light winds and next to no chance of rain, say the BBC - perfect in fact for a little up and over of the Mendip hills. Don’t worry about the climbing, we’re taking the relatively easy Shipham/Longbottom way up, and coming down via Burrington Combe which is arguably the best descent.

Once more it’s an open ride which means everyone’s welcome. See you outside Priory at 18:00

Wednesday Evening Ride: 20th July 2022

Assuming we all survive the forecast furnace of the early part of this week, Wednesdays cooler air promises perfect conditions for an evening bike ride. The route this week throws a lasso loop around Nailsea, and has Belmont Hill as its feature climb.

I know it’s summer, and you won’t need me to tell you sitting around drinking cold beer and eating barbequed food every day can’t be doing you any favours – so why not come along this Wednesday and spend a couple of hours doing body and soul a power of good.

Wednesday Evening Ride: 13th July 2022

All the forecasts agree it’s going to be a beautiful evening for a bike ride on Wednesday. Perfect conditions in fact for a climb of Burrington Coombe and a descent of the Gorge. You don’t get too many evenings like this in an English summer, so make sure you don’t waste this one!

Wednesday Evening Ride: 29th June 2022

What better way to spend the last Wednesday Evening of June than a bicycle ride up the iconic Cheddar Gorge? All the tourists will have gone home so it’ll just be us and the goats! As if that wasn’t enough, we return via Blagdon lake, the vineyards of the Aldwick Estate and if we’re in the mood, we’ll finish with a bit of a chaingang  down the A370. What’s not to like!

It’s an open ride once again this week, so everyone’s welcome. See you outside Priory School 18:00

Wednesday Evening Ride: 22nd June 2022

It’s the longest Wednesday of the year this week, and the weather forecast couldn’t be better. So why not pump up the tyres on your “best” bike, and come along for a mid-week ride. This week we climb Backwell Hill, box around the end of the airport runway, and then enjoy a long descent down into Wrington. It’s another Luke route - so it’s sure to ride well.

Once more it’s an open ride, so everyone’s welcome. Hopefully see you outside Priory School at 18:00

Wheelers C2C2C Ride: 18th June 2022

Something a bit different this weekend - a 116 mile Coast to Coast to Coast ride, from Weston Seafront, down to Lyme Regis, then back to Weston!

The route’s been test ridden this week, road closures checked for, and most importantly - Fish’n chips quality tested. All it needs now is some fine people to come along and ride it.

Planned stops are:
North Curry Community Cafe: @ 30 miles
Lyme Regis Seafront: @ 58 miles
The Feed Station Merriot: @ 77 miles

It’s always difficult to know how many riders will turn up for a ride like this. One thing’s for sure, there’ll be a mix of abilities, which makes keeping a big group together tricky - and frustrating for some. If there’s a decent turnout I propose to lead a “no drop” rear group, and have either a forward group with nominated leader, or just allow the forward group(s) to form organically on the road - let’s see what the numbers are on Saturday. The bottom line is it’s not a school trip - if you feel like pressing on and being first to the chippy, you should absolutely do it. The working assumption on the day will be, if you’re up ahead, you’re fine.

The route makes good use of lanes to avoid main roads. Expect the usual country lane hazards: gravel, pot holes, horses, oncoming traffic etc etc. Watch your speed around blind bends and be mindful of stopping distances and riders behind you.

A couple of time constraints:

The North Curry Café doesn’t open until 10am - fly across the levels too quickly, and you might have to wait a few minutes.

The Feed Station Café closes at 16:30. Chill out in Lyme Regis too long - and you’ll be drinking your coffee from a cardboard cup outside a petrol station! ( ideally, leave Lyme by about 14:15 )

Meet up outside The Grand Pier, ready to roll at 08:00. Should be fun!

Wednesday Evening Ride: 15th June 2022

All the weather forecasters are promising beautiful conditions this Wednesday. So why not get that bike out and give yourself the midweek treat of a summers evening ride? With the C2C2C ride on Saturday, we’ve chosen a fairly easy route this week. The main feature is Cleeve hill, a pleasant and steady climb up through Kings Wood.
Once again it’s an open ride, so all are welcome. See you outside Priory School at 18:00

Wednesday Evening Ride: 8th June 2022

A long descent from Longbottom up on the Mendips, pretty much all the way back to Sandford is the main feature of this week’s ride – so why not come along and give those little springs in your freehub a workout!  I’m sure there must be a climb in there somewhere, but seriously, these are the Mendips not the Alps – how hard can it be?

Wednesday Evening Ride: 1st June 2022

After a couple of easier weeks, I’ve been inundated with requests for something a bit tastier ( honest! ). So this weeks route includes a feature climb: Nash Hill!!

Actually, it’s not that bad – a bit steep, but not for long, and the rest of the route is pretty flat.

It’s an open ride, which means everyone's welcome to come along – so hopefully see you outside Priory school at 18:00
